Edmonton - Alberta's Capital
Located in Canada, Edmonton is the capital of the province of Alberta. Amongst the other metropolitan cities, it is ranked 6th in terms of area. On the map, it can be found in the central province of the prairies. The city is not only a wonderful place to stay but also a great tourist spot. Historically, it was discovered in the year 1754 and the Fort came up in the year 1795. Going deeper down, Edmonton derives its name from the birthplace of two very influential Europeans who settled in here. In 1905, it was declared as the capital of Alberta, a post that it still enjoys.
With a population of more than 750 thousand, it is not hard to find people belonging to different ethnicity in the city. As such, numerous festivals are celebrated in the city throughout the year. For this reason, Edmonton is also known as a city of festivals. Tourists can visit the city any time during the year and they are sure to witness one or more events being celebrated. The place does not find fame only in the tourism sector but also in several other industries such as oil and diamond. A number of projects have been started in the recent past and people are allowed visit for guided tours.
Edmonton is set at 2,200 ft. above sea level and has its set of natural scenes and beauty. Deep running river valleys, flat plains, ravines and mountains are some of the many things that can be enjoyed. Saskatchewan River flows through the city adding to its magnificence. North America's largest stretch of elm trees is located in this valley and is a much see. Most of the region has been altered to extract natural gas, but it still has lakes, parks and trails to walk on. An interesting part about the weather here is that it is very dry considering the presence of a river flowing through the heart of the city.
Northern location means it experiences extreme weather conditions. Tourists are advised to pack suitable clothes with them in accordance to the time of the year in which they plan to travel. Winters are very cold Edmonton gets covered in snow for most of the time providing ample opportunities for people who'd like to go on wintersport holiday in Canada. According to the metrological department, summers can reach as high as 30 degree Celsius while winters are easily below -20 degrees. As per the records, the coldest temperature recorded here is -49 degrees, very cold even by the highest of standards.
Presence of adequate infrastructure and facilities permit tourists to travel to and fro from the city and inside it with ease without any problems. Being the capital, it is well connected with the rest of the world. Plenty of hotels are available in and around major destinations to book into. Restaurants and pubs make sure that the city stays alive even during the nights. Shopping is not a problem and there is something available for people of all income groups.
